چکیده

The current study assesses the residual stresses and remnant damage caused by a spherical projectile impacting upon a flat surface. The immediate application of this information is to the problem of foreign object damage (FOD) associated with the ingestion of debris into an aircraft turbine engine and the subsequent reduction in component lifetime. The work is focused on two primary features: (i) the development of numerical models for the evaluation of the deformation and stresses associated with the impact process and (ii) the use of spatially-resolved residual stress measurements to verify experimentally the numerical analysis. As a first approximation, a quasi-static numerical model was developed by ignoring time-dependent effects (i.e., strain-rate sensitivity, wave and inertia effects, etc.), where the effects of velocity were approximated by adjusting the depth and diameter of the resulting impact crater to match that of actual impact craters at the corresponding velocity. The computed residual stresses and associated elastic strain gradients were compared to experimentally measured values, obtained using synchrotron x-ray diffraction methods. This comparison indicated that the quasi-static numerical analysis was adequate for moderate impact conditions (velocity = 200 m/s, energy = 2.7 J); however, under more aggressive conditions (velocity = 300 m/s, energy = 6.1 J), there was significant discrepancy between the numerical predictions and experimental measurements. Such discrepancy may be attributed to several factors that can occur at higher impact velocities, including strain-rate sensitivity, microcrack formation, and shear-band formation. A dynamic simulation, where the time-dependent effects of strainrate sensitivity and elastic-wave interactions were approximated, provided results in closer agreement with the experimental diffraction observations.

تحلیل تنش ناشی از FOD روی یک پره توربین گاز از جنس سوپرآلیاژ پایه نیکل

Foreign object damage (FOD) occurs when hard, millimeter-sized objects such as gravel or sand and even the pieces of the engine components are ingested into aircraft jet engines. Particles impacting blades produce small indentation craters which can become sites for fatigue crack initiation, severely limiting the lifetime of the blade. In this study, the impact on the edge of a thin plate is in...

Development of a Predictive Finite Element Model For Investigation of Phases Behavior After Cold Rolling Process

One of the surface defects that arise in sheet metal working is when the part removes from the die. Since there are no external forces to make this defect, the origin of such fail is known as residual stress. Residual stress can develop in sheet metal forming due to non uniform deformation. In this paper, the workpiece is carbon steel with different volume fractions and arrangement of ferrite ...

FGM properties and autofrettage pressure are considered as important parameters. Assumptions are variation of properties of FGM in radial direction, the residual stress in the absence of Bauschinger effect with the operation of variable m...

Least squares weighted residual method for finding the elastic stress fields in rectangular plates under uniaxial parabolically distributed edge loads

In this work, the least squares weighted residual method is used to solve the two-dimensional (2D) elasticity problem of a rectangular plate of in-plane dimensions 2a 2b subjected to parabolic edge tensile loads applied at the two edges x = a. The problem is expressed using Beltrami–Michell stress formulation. Airy’s stress function method is applied to the stress compatibility equation, and th...

Correlation between the Weld Residual Stresses and its Tensile and Impact Strength

In this study, the tensile strength, impact strength, and the hardness of the weld are determined. A criterion is proposed for describing the effect of residual stress on the weld mechanical properties. Dimensionless parameters such as Rya (the average of residual stress over the material yield strength), Rym (the maximum residual stress over the material yield strength), ...
